For the students and coaches of Capital Circus in Ottawa, attending Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA together was a chance to experience where the skills we practise every week can lead. We went as a circus school. We shared the evening as a circus family.

LUZIA: A World of Light, Rain and Extraordinary Skill
Inspired by Mexican culture, LUZIA unfolds as a waking dream. Its name combines the Spanish words luz, meaning light, and lluvia, meaning rain. Both become part of the storytelling.
The rain is especially unforgettable. A programmable curtain of water transforms the stage, while the performers turn demanding physical work into something that looks wonderfully fluid.
Among the evening’s standout moments:
Cyr wheel in the rain: sweeping rotations made balance and momentum feel almost weightless.
Aerial straps: an artist moving between water and air brought together remarkable strength, control and grace.
Hoop diving: rapid sequences of jumps revealed the precision behind every take-off, opening and landing.
Russian swings: soaring flights between synchronised swings made teamwork and trust impossible to overlook.
Contortion and live music: extraordinary physical expression met a soundtrack that gave each scene its own atmosphere.
For students, these acts open up a world of possibility. Through a coach’s eyes, they also reveal the fundamentals: alignment, preparation, clean transitions and the ability to repeat difficult movements with confidence.
That is a valuable connection to bring back to class. Behind the spectacle are skills built patiently, over time.

Our role as coaches is to turn inspiration into purposeful progress. That might mean a steadier handstand, a more controlled aerial sequence or the confidence to perform in front of others.
